Seattle, Washington is one of the largest cities in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Early records of settlement started on November 13, 1851 led by Arthur A. Denny and his men. This group was colloquially referred to as the Denny Party. It bore several names. Seattle was originally called New York and then later on changed to Duwamps. It later embraced its original name as tribute to Chief Noah Sealth, chief of the original tribes that lived in the area.

Seattle's earlier years were quite interesting. After the immigration of Denny's party on the eastern shores of the Puget Sound, it was found that there was a shortage of marriageable women in Seattle. One of the city's pioneers. Asa Mercer decided to visit New York City in 1864 to "recruit" prospective brides for the men of Seattle. He then brought back 100 women who became known as the Mercer girls. A few years later, Seattle was incorporated as a city.

Seattle emerged as one of the largest settlements in Washington. This number even increased when the city was chosen over Tacoma as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The gold rush in Seattle came afterwards after the discovery of gold on the Fraser River and later in Yukon in 1896.
